Dictionary of Literary Biography on Joseph L(eo) Mankiewicz (page 3)

This Reckless Age (1932) is the second film version of the play The Goose Hangs High by Lewis Beach. A mining company manager (Richard Bennett) is so happy his estranged children are coming to visit that he lets an unscrupulous employee keep the company's records; when the employee frames the manager for embezzlement, the children (Frances Dee and Buddy Rogers) come to their father's defense. Another 1932 film Mankiewicz wrote was Sky Bride (1932), in which one pilot accidentally causes the death of another.

Million Dollar Legs (1932), an important screen credit for Mankiewicz, created a small controversy; Herman Mankiewicz produced the picture and claimed to have written much of it without credit. When the film, a comedy about a mythical country that enters the Olympics, became a great success the long-running rivalry between the two brothers came to a head, with each wanting credit for the film. The attention gained from this film resulted in Joseph Mankiewicz receiving more prestigious assignments, including an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (1933) filmed with an all-star cast.

Mankiewicz was one of nineteen writers who worked on If I Had a Million (1932), an episodic film about several people who are given one million dollars by an eccentric millionaire (Richard Bennett).
