Growing up in affluent surroundings in a very standard Baltimore suburb, Waters picked up the hobby of venturing to junkyards to see cars being smashed. He recreated this melee at home with his own toy cars. Waters was also obsessed with getting acne as a teenager-- he wanted to see what it was like--and was quite disappointed when his skin turned out to be smooth and clear throughout his life.
It didn't take long for Waters to find his first true love--bad movies. At his Catholic school, the nuns would make a list of all the movies that would send kids to hell if they saw them. It was at this point that Waters knew the reason he was attending this school. After scanning the list, he told Sally A. Lodge in Publishers Weekly, "I'd run to see them." Attending a conservative high school also worked wonders for Waters. He told Gerald L'Ecuyer of Egg magazine that every morning at the Catholic Calvert Hall, "you had to shake hands with the principal. Girls had to curtsy. There were two full theatre productions every year.... A good school, except for too much sports." In high school, Waters continued his search for sensational movies, often prowling the seedier areas of his town in search of horror and soft-core porno films.
