John Hockenberry | Biography

Television and radio journalist and novelist John Hockenberry has packed a lot of living and experiences into his life. "Oh, the places John Hockenberry has gone and things he's done," wrote Curt Schleier in Biography. "The NBC news correspondent for Dateline rode a mule among Kurdish refugees in the mountains of Iraq, came under fire with American troops in Somalia, and covered the funeral of the Ayatollah Khomeini amid millions of Iranian mourners shouting `Death to America!' He violated an Israeli curfew in Gaza, worked pressroom phones in Jerusalem wile Iraqi Scud missiles flew overhead, and reported on the eruption of Mount Saint Helens." Schleier could also have added Hockenberry's two books to that list of achievements: his memoir Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence and the 2001 mystery-thriller A River out of Eden, as well as a distinguished decade-long radio career with National Public Radio.
