Nixon was born in Los Angeles, California. She lived with her parents, grandparents, and two younger sisters in a large double house. Nixon once recalled that at a very young age she wanted to be a writer. When she was three, she began teaching herself to read by memorizing the words in her favorite books. She also followed her mother around, saying, "Write this down.
