Your death defines my life. I want to find the love we never had and explicate it in your name. I want to take your secrets public. I want to burn down the distance between us. I want to give you breath."
Lee Earle Ellroy, who would later call himself James Ellroy, was born 4 March 1948 in Los Angeles, the only child of Armand and Geneva Hilliker Ellroy. In My Dark Places Ellroy describes his parents as a couple "who excelled at appearances. They were a great looking and cheap couple, along the lines of Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in Macao. They stayed together for fifteen years. It had to be sex." Ellroy 's father worked in a variety of business capacities and served as accountant and business manager for Rita Hayworth in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Geneva, called Jean, was a registered nurse. Jean and her son later moved to El Monte, fourteen miles east of downtown Los Angeles, where she worked as a nurse at the Packard Bell Electronics plant. Ellroy visited his father on weekends.
