Jack Kirby has been called "the king of comics" by his legions of fans, a "comics artist's artist," by fellow creator Kevin Eastman, and the "greatest artist in the history of comic books," by Frank Miller, yet another comic book artist influenced by Kirby. Others know writer/illustrator Kirby as the man who almost single-handedly created the modern comic book; as the creator of some of the most memorable super heroes in the trade, from Captain America to the Fantastic Four, Hulk, the X-Men, and Thor, Kirby is the stuff of comic book legend. One of the most prolific and influential comic book creators, Kirby "created more than anybody else ever did," said Kirby biographer Ray Wyman, Jr. to Dennis McLellan in the Los Angeles Times. "More" in this case really means more: 20,138 pages of published comic book and cartoon artwork, 1,385 comic book covers, 2,600 stories, and 600 characters in a career spanning over fifty years.
