Kemp, while expressing opinions similar to those of
Publishers Weekly regarding the relative merits of the three volumes in the trilogy, pointed out that "a disappointing novel by Johansen is still far better than the work of many other authors."
A Career Milestone
Johansen went on to produce other well-received romance novels in the 1990s. Of The Magnificent Rogue, published in 1993, Booklist commented, "Passion and suspense abound in [this]. . . robust romance. . . . Spellbinding romantic fiction from a master of the genre." Library Journal's Bettie Alston Spivey called the 1994 novel The Beloved Scoundrel, a romance of the Napoleonic era, "absorbing" and thought readers would find it a page-turner by an author who "has outdone herself here." The same year, Johansen produced Midnight Warrior, a tale of England and Wales set in 1066. Kristin Ramsdell of Library Journal commented on the book and wrote: "Believable, thoughtfully constructed characters, complex plotting, and lively dialog characterize this sensual historical."
Johansen achieved a personal milestone in 1996 with the publication of The Ugly Duckling.
