Follett Award that year. It was the sole Newbery Honor Book in 1965 and winner of the Clara Ingram Judson Award in 1965.
Across Five Aprils is also Hunt's favorite of all her books because of its strong emotional impact and the fond memories it evokes.
Reviewers also recognized the merit of the book. The New York Times Book Review cited it as a "beautifully written book--a prize to those who take the time to read it, whatever their ages." In Horn Book , the reviewer remarked that the novel "gives the reader an intense experience because of the reality of the characters; ... readers ... will not be quite the same again." Booklist called it "a memorable story of the tragic years of the Civil War." Zena Sutherland said in her review for the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books that Across Five Aprils was "historically authenticated" and the characters "completely convincing."
The book spans the five Aprils of the Civil War, 1861 to 1865. Set in southern Illinois away from most of the conflict, it is like a Greek tragedy in that most of the violence is talked about or reported in letters.
