Born in New York City, Howard Nemerov was reared to a state of mind that was sophisticated, disciplined, and dutiful. After graduating from Harvard in 1941, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1944, becoming a flying officer, and later turned to the U.S. Army Air Force (1944-1945) to achieve the rank of first lieutenant. After the war, Nemerov taught at Hamilton College, Bennington College, Brandeis University, the University of Minnesota, and Hollins College before being appointed Poetry Consultant at the Library of Congress (1963-1964). Since that time he has been a distinguished professor on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis. From 1946 to 1951 he served as associate editor for Furioso, developing his skills as a keen-witted reviewer of contemporary poetry.
Partly because of Nemerov's experience as a critic and as a practicing poet, to read The Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov (1977) is in some ways to chronicle the development of twentieth-century American poetry.
