Dictionary of Literary Biography on Henrietta Tindal

Inspired by some of Henrietta Tindal's fugitive pieces, the acclaimed novelist, dramatist, conversationalist, and letter writer Mary Russell Mitford wrote on 30 November 1841 to the then Henrietta Harrison: "next to Miss Barrett, the most remarkable woman probably that ever lived, I know no one of whom I entertain such sanguine expectations." Mitford went on later to include Tindal in the "Female Poets" chapter of her Recollections of a Literary Life; or, Books, Places and People (1852). Although largely forgotten in this century, Tindal's poetry struck a chord in her own time, particularly with women readers. In fact, Queen Victoria read Tindal's poems. Perhaps what won the admiration of her contemporary readers is what modern readers also find exciting in her poetical works: Tindal juxtaposes the oft-occurring events of nineteenth-century womanhood with well-known (and frequently royal) historical events, thereby investing the domestic sphere with a majesty and dignity seldom found before...
