In 1955 H. C. Branner contributed an essay called "Barndommens mose" (Childhood's Bog) to Glimt af barndommen (Glimpse of Childhood), an anthology of childhood memories by prominent Danish authors. In this essay Branner recalls his fourth birthday, when he first became aware of a mysterious bog in the woods near his home. Synesthesia is at work as the adult Branner steps off the evening train and smells the swampish water: "Ved den lugt bliver jeg igen en lille dreng og lever et øjeblik i en verden fuld af brændende sol og kulsort mørke, en verden, hvor alt muligt, hvor liv og død og guder og uhyrer er ting til at tage og føle på" (At that smell I become a little boy again and live for a moment in a world full of burning sun and coal-black darkness...
