Learns from best
Soon Norman began working on his accuracy and improved so that he could consistently play par golf. He also learned from the best--Jack Nicklaus. Norman read the books Golf My Way and 55 Ways to Lower Your Golf Score, both written by the legendary golfer. He sneaked the books into Aspley High School and read them while he was supposed to be reading his textbooks. "Jack Nicklaus has always been my idol," Norman confided in the New York Times. "I studied his game and I studied his approach to the game, but I did not try to pattern my style after him."
In training
After graduating from high school, Norman worked briefly unloading trucks. The work, though hard, helped build up his strength. He then entered a golf apprenticeship (training) program. In Australia, unlike in the United States, players must serve a three-year apprenticeship before turning professional. "People think I'm a natural golfer," Norman explained in Sports Illustrated. "They have no idea of what went into it."
Norman worked first at a golf shop in Sydney, running the shop during the day and picking up golf balls on the driving range. After work, he continued to practice. Golf officials, however, would not let him play in a national tournament until his apprenticeship had ended, even though he dominated amateur tournaments in his local area.
