Studies Mathematics at Göttingen and Berlin
In 1846, Riemann entered Göttingen University as student of theology and philology, but his talent and superior knowledge in mathematics was obvious, and he soon persuaded his father to let him devote himself to mathematics. The faculty at Göttingen included the "king of mathematicians" Karl Friedrich Gauss, who lectured on the method of least squares. It also included Moritz A. Stern, who lectured on the numerical solution of equations and definite integrals, and the astronomer Carl Wolfgang Benjamin Goldschmidt, who lectured on terrestrial magnetism. Stern was later to recall that Riemann "already sang like a canary." The quality of teaching at Göttingen was low and elementary, however, and students were not included in the creative thinking of the teachers.
After only a year at Göttingen, Riemann spent two years in Berlin, where democratic ideas were afoot and the faculty at the University of Berlin shared ideas in open discussions with students. The mathematics faculty included Peter Dirichlet, Karl Jacobi, Jakob Steiner, and Ferdinand Eisenstein.
