He attended the University of Hull, where he graduated in 1977, with honors, with a B.A. degree in geography. On 12 August 1978 he married Sara Jones, a teacher, and in 1980 he graduated with a Ph.D. in geography, writing his Ph.D. thesis on the spatial imagination in Victorian literature.
