Nix's lighter side can be witnessed in a trio of books in the "Very Clever Baby" series, parodies of easy readers which are intended for parents. Written for two sets of parents who had babies on the way, these books exemplify the Nix philosophy of writing: "Essentially written for me. . . . It was what I wanted to read." Nix has made a cottage industry of writing books that he himself wants to read. The serendipity to this equation is that such books please a larger audience, too.
Youth in Canberra
Though born in Melbourne in 1963, Nix was raised in Canberra, Australia's national capital. "It was (and is) an unusual city," Nix noted in his interview, "having a population then of only about 200,000 people, but all the amenities of a capital." A completely planned city, most of it was built from the 1950s on; a fitting background for the future fantasy writer to have a city growing around him as he came of age. Books formed a baseline of interest for Nix from his early youth, both inside and outside the home.
