Friedrich Glauser's literary reputation rests mainly on his seven novels; the first to be written, Gourrama: Ein Roman aus der Fremdenlegion (1940), describes life in the French Foreign Legion, while the other six are crime stories reflecting a realistic approach to everyday Swiss life in the 1930s. The novels are remarkable for their psychological insights and strong narrative tension. Glauser was also a successful and fluent short story writer.
