Dictionary of Literary Biography on Friedrich Engels

Friedrich Engels is most often seen in the shadow of his friend and collaborator, Karl Marx--a position he himself did not contest: "Es ist mein Schicksal, daß ich den Ruhm und die Ehre einernten muß, deren Saat ein Größerer als ich, Karl Marx, ausgestreut hat. Und so kann ich nur geloben, den Rest meines Lebens im aktiven Dienst des Proletariats so zu verbringen, daß ich womöglich mich jener Ehren noch nachträglich würdig mache" (It is my fate that I must harvest the fame and the honor, the seed of which was sown by one greater than I, Karl Marx. And so I can only pledge to spend the rest of my life in the active service of the proletariat in such a way that I will yet make myself worthy of these honors wherever possible), he said on his seventieth birthday. Theoretician, writer, propagandist, and adviser of the nascent working-class movement and its associated political parties that developed in Europe and the United States, Engels, it can be argued, had an influence during his lifetime that equaled or even surpassed that of Marx.
