He admits to a wanderlust that plagued him even as a young child growing up in Denmark, but as with many of his protagonists, Haugaard found his own pleasant, easygoing world shattered by political fortune. After daydreaming for years about sailing the open seas, as a teenager he made it on board the last ship out of free Denmark before the country was invaded by Nazi Germany. He spent much of his early adulthood traveling the world before finally settling into a remote corner of Ireland. But even in his seventies Haugaard still immerses himself in other cultures and considers himself a citizen not of one country, but of the world. Haugaard's protagonists reflect his indomitable faith that youth can prevail despite frequent encounters with adult betrayal, persecution, and death.
A Childhood in Denmark
Haugaard was born in Denmark in 1923 into an educated, well-to-do urban family. His parents possessed somewhat of a leftist outlook--both were members of Denmark's Radical Party, and his mother had been the first woman in the country to ride a motorbike; she also studied engineering in college.
