Doubts might be raised about the appropriateness of considering Lussu a novelist, given the fact that the author himself, in a note to
Un anno sull'Altipiano, prefers to describe the book as a memoir:
Il lettore non troverà, in questo libro, né il romanzo, né la storia. Sono ricordi personali, riordinati alla meglio e limitati ad un anno, fra i quattro di guerra ai quali ho preso parte. Io non ho raccontato che quello che ho visto e mi ha maggiormente colpito.
(The reader will find neither a novel nor history in this book. It consists simply of personal memories, put together in somewhat haphazard fashion and limited to one year only, out of the four during which I took part in the war. I have recounted nothing but what I saw and what made the deepest impression on me.)
Later, in the preface to La difesa di Roma (The Defence of Rome, 1987), written in the last decade of his life but published posthumously, Lussu stated:
Tutti i miei scritti sono saggi politici e sul mio tempo. E direi, anche, tutti saggi autobiografici. Non per una spontanea esigenza interiore, ma per ricordare gli avvenimenti personalmente vissuti, e per comunicarli e giustificarli agli altri.
