Eldrick "Tiger" Woods began playing golf almost from the time he could walk. His father wanted to give his son the opportunities denied him as a child. Woods dutifully took advantage of those opportunities and by age 20 had surpassed his father's wildest hopes. He is the youngest golfer and only African American to ever win the U.S. Junior Amateur (unpaid) title and the only player to win the title three times. In 1994 Woods became the youngest golfer and the only African American to ever win the U.S. Amateur title, and in 1995 and 1996 he successfully defended his crown. All of these accomplishments, however, were just leading up to his record-breaking performance at the 1997 Masters tournament. Although Woods is a reluctant role model, golf experts have called him "potentially the most important player to enter the game in 50 years." By winning the Masters tournament for a second time in 2001, Woods distinguished himself as the first man since Bobby Jones to hold all four of the major golf tournament titles at the same time.
