His work betrays no signs of retrenchment, no evidence that he will cease being an acerbic, painstaking, vivid, lyrical, funny, and altogether serious scribe of human loss, self-delusion, and entropy.

The place of Albee's birth is usually listed as Washington, D.C., but this is a legal fiction. Two weeks after his birth, Albee's natural parents gave him up for adoption to Reed and Frances Albee; this transaction occurred in the District of Columbia. Albee does not know and has been hitherto prohibited by law to discover either the identities of his natural parents or his actual place of birth. It is known only that he was born somewhere in Virginia. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that Albee's entry into this world was accompanied by primal loss and dispossession, the pertinent circumstances of which are the guarded secrets of sanctioned authority.

Reed Albee was the wealthy owner of part of the Keith-Albee Theatre Circuit started by his father, Edward Franklin Albee II. Reed and Frances Albee lived in Larchmont, New York, where they raised their adopted son amid the conspicuous splendor of a large Tudor house, servants, tutors, horses, pets, toys, and chauffeured limousines.
