Authors and Artists for Young Adults on Douglas Coupland

What started as a handbook to 1990s hip culture written by would-be sculptor Douglas Coupland ended up being a call to arms to a generation that, until he defined it, had gone unnamed, a generation he called Generation X. These 1990's "twentysomethings" finally had a face when Coupland, after receiving a $22,500 advance to write a Preppie Handbook-type guide, observed and detailed the generation to a tee in his 1991 book Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. He invented succinct and witty tag-words that clearly described what it was the members of this generation were feeling and trying to say. Coupland was then deemed the "voice of a generation"--a title he claimed he did not want and tried to shake off in his subsequent writings. Still, he was known for his witty, detailed observations of culture and society, and in addition to publishing seven books, wrote for magazines like Wired, Spin, New York Times, and New Republic.
