1 After university Adams and "a couple of guys" decided to make a go of writing together. "We then had an argument about what sort of jobs we ought to take to support us in the meantime. They argued for a sound career to fall back on. I argued for the minimum job necessary for survival so that there would be no fall-back position, you would have to become a writer."2
Adams held a number of minimum jobs after graduation, including hospital reporter, barn builder, chicken-shed cleaner, and bodyguard for an Arab's royal family. "I sat outside their hotel room for twelve hours a night while they watched television. It wasn't difficult--you stand up, sit down, open a door, close a door, you bow. And if someone comes along with a gun or a hand grenade, you run away."1
He also worked with Monty Python's Graham Chapman for a year, "mostly on projects that never saw the light of day. The Pythons go through regular periods where they're not talking to each other and say they'll never work together again. This was one such period. Graham [Chapman] is not the least weird person in the world."3
