Dictionary of Literary Biography on Doris Gates

With the exception of brief periods away from the state for educational purposes, Doris Gates has been a lifelong resident of California. Born in Mountain View, California, on 26 November 1901, she is the eldest daughter of Bessie Louise Jones Gates and Charles Obed Gates, a physician whose first seventeen years of practice were spent making calls in the small town and surrounding rural area. His career changed when he moved his family to the prune ranch his parents had built and tended in their later years. Here the family lived until Doris Gates and her sister had finished high school. Gates's education continued at Fresno State College, California, from 1924 to 1926, Los Angeles Library School from 1926 to 1927, and Western Reserve University in Cleveland from 1929 to 1930. She held the position as director of library work with children in the Fresno County Free Library from 1930 to 1940.
