Authors and Artists for Young Adults on David Mamet (page 2)

"I don't see how anyone can escape a stormy adolescence. I think some of my anger, perhaps unconscious, comes out in my plays, in the gut language. But to me men trying to communicate speak that way. And what I use fits my meter.

"What I write about is what I think is missing from our society. And that's communication on a basic level. I've been in Freudian analysis and it helped some, but what I mean is nonprofessional communication. Nobody talks to an uncle or a grandmother any more."4

Moved with his mother to the North side of Chicago into a development called Olympic Fields. "We lived in a model home so small, it makes [a table for two] look like f--ing Switzerland...."5

Attended the prestigious Frances Parker School, but was a poor student who rebelled against the repression of his bourgeois background. "... There was nothing to do. I was fourteen years old, I was trying to get into trouble.

"I am very happy to be part of that august group now, but not when I was fourteen."5

Worked as busboy at Chicago's "Second City" comedy club, and also acted at Hull House, an innovative community theater.
