This mythos is most fully embodied in
The Dance and the Railroad and two other plays written at the outset of Hwang's dramatic career,
FOB (1979) and
Family Devotions.
The oldest of three children, David Henry Hwang was born on 11 August 1957 to Henry Yuan and Dorothy Yu Huang Hwang in San Gabriel, California. Henry Hwang, born and raised in Shanghai, immigrated to America in the 1940s when he was accepted as an undergraduate business major at the University of Southern California. At the university Henry met his future wife, who had been born in the southeastern Chinese city of Amoy and raised in the Philippines, enjoying many privileges as the daughter of wealthy parents. Following his graduation, Henry quickly proved himself a successful and widely respected entrepreneur, eventually establishing the Far East National Bank, headquartered in Los Angeles, and becoming its first president. A gifted musician whose goal was to establish herself as a concert pianist, Dorothy had chosen to attend the University of Southern California because she imagined it would allow her to form invaluable connections with the elite members of the region's music community.
