Authors and Artists for Young Adults on Dave Barry (page 2)

The son of Marion and David Barry, a Presbyterian minister, the future columnist, according to New York Times Book Review writer Alison Teal, grew up in an "all-WASP upper-middle-class neighborhood, played Little League baseball, mowed his parents' lawn and . . . attended Episcopalian Church." He also studied at a New York school with the very American name of Pleasantville High School, where he was elected Class Clown.

"As a kid," reported Peter Richmond in the New York Times Magazine, "his horn-rimmed glasses, home-sheared haircuts and wax-bean physique forced Barry to hone his sense of humor--largely out of self defense." In an interview published in Crown News, Barry elaborated with this description of himself as a child: "[I was a] geek with a real high forehead. Real high. You could have rented out advertising up there. In fact, there are certain board games you could have played on my forehead, no problem.
