Using his birth name, O'Shaughnessy is also the author of two adult novels, Ayuamarca and Hell's Horizon, which blend horror, fantasy, crime, and mystery. However, it is for his "Darren Shan" juvenile titles involving the world of vampires that the writer is best known. These include, in addition to the debut title in the series, The Vampire's Assistant and Tunnels of Blood, and this trio is followed by another trio of interlocking titles comprised of Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death, and The Vampire Prince. All of these titles continue the story of the fictional Darren Shan and his adventures in vampire country. Regarding the first title in the series, O'Shaughnessy told Damian Kelleher in the Daily Telegraph, "It's not a book that sets out to be frightening for the sake of it. Dark things happen, but they happen for a reason, and there are definitely repercussions.
