Authors and Artists for Young Adults on Daniel Manus Pinkwater (page 2)

They were wrong. I was right, I still derive great pleasure from looking at things...."2

"Reading was in the air when I was young. The kids in the neighborhood played '20,000 Leagues under the Sea' and 'Mysterious Island' and 'Three Musketeers' games in their backyards. It was our older brothers and sisters who turned us on to good reading. Our teachers were merely functionaries--they didn't particularly want to be at school, and we didn't want to be there either. They forced us to learn to read anyway and then basically kept us indoors for the next few years. The librarians, without pretense of caring or understanding, simply told us not to get the book dirty. 'Here's your card, and there's a fine if you bring it back late.' This was fine with us. We heard about books by word of mouth--the kid next door had an older brother who told me about the Three Musketeers. I got to read good books, although mainly adventure stories, because there weren't as many books around at the time. What was around was not watered down, socially engineered monstrosities, which an overly fat publishing industry has produced to stock libraries in more recent times.
