World of Criminal Justice on Daniel and Philip Berrigan
The Berrigan brothers were born in Minnesota, Daniel in the small farming community of Virginia on May 9, 1921 and Philip in Two Harbors on May 5, 1923. Their father was a devout Catholic and a socialist, and political activism was well known to them in their early years. When Daniel finished high school in 1939, he entered the Jesuit order. While studying, he began to write poetry and was first published in 1942. He was drafted into the army during World War II the following year. Sent to boot camp in the South, he was deeply affected by racial segregation. Daniel was ordained in 1952 and also completed a master of arts degree that year. In France for a two-year study period, he became involved in the Worker-Priest Movement, a group that advocated keeping the church relevant in the lives of working people.
