Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1951, DeFelice has credited her mother for instilling a strong storytelling tradition in her. As she once recalled, "my two brothers, my sister, and I would snuggle in Mom's lap while she read to us. She was a great storyteller and had this terrific sense of rhythm and timing. It was in that big, tan chair where we all used to curl up together that I learned to love stories and to feel their magic." Growing up in a Philadelphia suburb, DeFelice recalled her childhood as "pretty idyllic," with time spent either playing with her brothers or curled up in a chair somewhere lost in a good book. Her psychiatrist father was also supportive of his daughter's interests. "You could tell him anything. So my early years were very nourishing."
Graduating from her local high school's honors program, DeFelice enrolled at William Smith College in the town of Geneva, about forty miles southeast of Rochester, New York. She immediately fell in love with the region, and has lived there ever since.
