"They've made an art house slasher movie, a screwball send-up of parenthood, and an entir e comedy about the inventor of the hula hoop. The extent to which one enjoys their pictures, or doesn't, depends largely on one's tolerance for the clever yet essentially empty references they favor."
Different Paths to the Same Goal
Joel and Ethan were born in 1955 and 1958 respectively, and grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both their parents were college professors: their father an economics instructor, and their mother an art historian. The brothers' interest in moviemaking dates back to the mid-1960s, when they filmed Super-8 remakes of vintage Hollywood B-movies, such as Advise and Consent and The Naked Prey, under Joel's direction. When the Coens left their hometown t o attend colleges in different states, they had no plans to resume their childhood partnership.
Joel struck out for Massachusetts initially, studying at Simon's Rock College, and then transferring to New York University, where he studied film.
