T. Kirkpatrick (1848-1921), a man revered by Lewis for the intellectual training he provided. Lewis entered Oxford in 1917, then joined the army and served in France with the Somerset Light Infantry. He was wounded in 1918 and returned to Oxford in 1919. His undergraduate career was distinguished by his receiving firsts in three courses: honour moderations (Greek and Latin literature), greats (philosophy and history), and English. His first academic appointment was a temporary position at Oxford in 1924-1925 as a tutor in philosophy, taking the place of a tutor who was spending a sabbatical year in America. In 1925 Lewis was elected a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, as a tutor in English language and literature. He held this position until 1954, when he left Oxford to accept the chair of medieval and Renaissance literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He married Joy Davidman Gresham (1915-1960), an American poet and novelist, in 1956. His death on 22 November 1963, from heart failure following an extended illness, came on the same day as did those of John F.
