He has published more than forty-five books (and counting), with many of his books appearing in both American and British editions, and his work has been translated into French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
De Lint has played an important role in developing the subgenre known as "urban fantasy" or, as he prefers to call it, "mythic fiction," which he describes on his website (http://www.charlesdelint.com) as "basically mainstream writing that incorporates elements of myth and folklore, rather than secondary world fantasy." Blending fantastic elements from folktales, urban folklore, and myths with contemporary realistic settings, de Lint's work has become progressively more character-driven. He is known for his ability to create characters from marginalized social groups ("outsiders" because of their ethnicity or gender) in a genre traditionally associated with Anglo- or European-American characters.
Charles Henri Diederick Hoefsmit de Lint was born in Bussum, the Netherlands, on 22 December 1951 to Frederick Charles Hoefsmit and Gerardina Margaretha Hoefsmit-de Lint. Four months after his birth, the family moved to Canada. They lived on both sides of the Ottawa River near Ottawa, in both Ontario and Quebec; the family moved frequently because of his father's job as a surveyor, also living in Turkey and Lebanon.
