Charles Bukowski , an internationally recognized literary figure, first published a short story, "Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip," in Story magazine in 1944, when he was twenty-four years old; he began writing and publishing poetry at the age of thirty-five. Now in his seventies, he has published more than sixty books of poetry and prose. His books have been published in over a dozen languages, and his poems and stories appear frequently in newspapers and literary magazines throughout the world. Bukowski earned his reputation outside established literary channels. A supremely self-motivated literary maverick, he has had a career publishing with small presses, literary magazines, and underground alternative journals. This publishing world is an unruly one. Nevertheless, Bukowski has succeeded within its parameters and continues to thrive ubiquitously. He has written more than fifteen hundred magazine publications. For twenty-five years, Black Sparrow Press, one of the most successful and respected independent publishers, has been publishing his books, most of which have gone through several printings.
