I was also reading arm-loads of books. Children's books were very warm and satisfying for me; they always had happy endings. Adult books didn't, and I hated making the transition. For years I'd sneak back into the children's room of the library to get some little, comforting story. One of my favorite authors was Edward Eager, with his semi-fantasies about four children. "There I was carrying off all sorts of things, at the same time feeling I didn't have any poise. Though I had a lot of friends and was actually a very successful student, it always looked like other kids were more at the center of things, that I would never achieve the level of popularity I had day-dreamed of.
