"A lot of people don't think that 'normal' and 'Southern California' go together, but my childhood was very normal and happy. Nothing marked it as different or strange."2
Attended a private school in the fourth grade and recalled that while his peers were painting and playing, he was frequenting libraries and reading voraciously. "The Lorax by Dr. Seuss was probably my favorite picture book when I was a kid. Dahl's James and the Giant Peach appealed to the very nasty side of a third and fourth grader. I liked Dahl a lot. I also went through the whole thing with the Judy Blume books, which must be sort of strange. I don't know if there are a lot of male readers for that. I read all of the typical seventies teen books, like S.E. Hinton. While other kids were bringing home paintings to their parents, I brought home short stories. There was no definite moment when this fourth grade kid reached an epiphany as to when he knew he wanted to be a writer. It was a very gradual awakening of a desire to express myself.
