When CA asked Mertz about the fact that by writing under two pen names she has essentially three identities, she replied, "We all present different faces to different people. Writing under the pseudonyms lets me do this in an official sort of way. And I'm rather proud of the fact, if I may brag a bit," Mertz continued, "that my three alter egos are so different from one another. I know a lot of other people do different series under different names, but I do think mine are quite different. This is wonderful, because it gives me a chance to be all the different people I really am." The author said that whether she writes a Michaels or a Peters book depends on her contract: ". . . at a certain point, a certain book is due for one publisher or another, and the next one happens to be either a Michaels or a Peters.
