Dictionary of Literary Biography on Anne Rice

Anne Rice is a best-selling author of Gothic novels, historical fiction, and erotica under her own name and two pseudonyms. Interest in Rice's life has earned her celebrity status among her fans. Not only does Rice intertwine the past and present, but her vampires, witches, ghosts, and human "outsiders" travel around the world as she tells tales that never shy away from taboo subjects. A thread of philosophy runs through her writing, as themes concerning immortality and morality are repeated using different genres, subjects, and writing styles. Rice puts herself into her novels, allowing characters to live her experiences and voice her thoughts. The history of her writing is thus the history of her own journey of self-discovery. In fact, Rice has described her writing as a therapeutic process that has helped bring together a personality fragmented by several losses in her early years. Rice's books have attracted a huge following of diverse readers and have gained attention from the academic community as well.
