Dictionary of Literary Biography on Anne (Harvey) Sexton (page 2)

Sexton was born Anne Gray Harvey in Newton, Massachusetts. The daughter of Ralph Churchill Harvey and Mary Gray Staples Harvey, she attended the public schools of Wellesley, Massachusetts, from 1934 to 1945, the Rogers Hall preparatory school for girls in Lowell from 1945 to 1947, and Garland Junior College in Boston in 1947 and 1948. At the age of nineteen she eloped to North Carolina with Alfred Muller ("Kayo") Sexton II, whom she married 16 August 1948. In later years she lived with her husband in Baltimore and San Francisco, as well as in the Massachusetts towns of Cochituate, Lower Newton Falls, and Weston. A beautiful woman, she occasionally worked as a model, having studied modeling on a scholarship provided by the Hart Agency of Boston. Her first child, Linda Gray Sexton, was born 21 July 1953. The following year the young mother entered a mental institution after suffering a nervous breakdown. Out of the hospital, Sexton gave birth to a second daughter, Joyce Ladd Sexton, on 5 August 1955, but was again hospitalized for mental illness the following year.
