Andre Norton ranks among the top best-selling authors published by Ace, the leading paperback publisher of science fiction and fantasy. Her novels, which have sold in the millions, stay in print longer than those of most other science fiction authors, and her works have been translated and made available in thirteen foreign countries.
Critical approval too has accompanied popular approval, as Norton has been honored by receiving a variety of awards. She is the first woman elected to Lin Carter's Swordsmen and Sorcerers Guild, a select company of writers of fantasy. In 1964 and 1968 she was nominated for the Hugo, the award given by the general readership of science fiction and fantasy to the author of the best work in those genres the preceding year. In 1977 she was presented with the Gandalf, a special Hugo for overall excellence in science fiction and fantasy--only the fourth time such an award has been bestowed.
