Though Western educated, Aidoo derives her artistic integrity from her strong African ties. She was born on 23 March 1942 in the Fanti town of Abeadzi Kyiakor, near Dominase, in the central region of Ghana. One of the children of Nana Yaw Fama, a chief of Abeadzi Kyiakor, and his wife, Maame Abba Abasema, she was raised in the royal household, an environment that proved instrumental in raising her consciousness of traditional lore and ritual, appropriateness in the use of language, and human drama in general. She went to Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast and from 1961 to 1964 attended the University of Ghana, Legon, an institution with a school of drama and a writers' workshop. Little wonder then that her first literary accomplishments were two plays and a collection of short stories that she conceived of as oral performances written mainly to be heard. 'The Dilemma of a Ghost was completed in 1964, the year of her graduation with a B.A. in English (honors program), and the play was presented the same year for three nights on 12, 13, and 14 March by the Students' Theatre, Legon.
