Combining thorough research and factual details with literary techniques such as dialogue and narration, Allan W. Eckert brings to life the world of nature in his documentary fiction and recreates the adventures and people of the past in his historical narratives. Able to capture the time and place he is describing, Eckert's own excitement for his subject matter makes for well-told stories that both entertain and inform his readers. These same elements are transferred to his juvenile novels, which include Blue Jacket: War Chief of the Shawnees, Incident at Hawk's Hill, and Savage Journey, as well as the "Mesmerian Annals" nature and ecology series of fantasy novels. Having written such a variety of books, Eckert sees only more opportunities in the future: "I fully anticipate that some other wonderfully interesting thing will have captured my attention," he relates in an autobiographical essay for Something about the Author Autobiography Series (SAAS). "It may be something entirely apart from anything I have ever attempted before--the chances are good, in fact, that it will be--and once more I'll be off and running on the research trail as I attempt to track down all the information I can find or experience about it."
Although he was born in Buffalo, New York, Eckert spent the majority of his childhood in the Chicago area.
