Additionally, Ross has created a superhero trilogy composed of
Earth X, Universe X, and
Paradise X. Eric Evans, writing in
Comics Journal, noted that "superstar creators in mainstream comics don't come any bigger than Alex Ross. . . . His name on a cover practically guarantees stellar sales, and there are very few creators in that league in any medium."
An Early Achiever
Ross, born in Portland, Oregon, in 1970 and raised in Lubbock, Texas, showed early promise as an artist. As a three year old, according to his mother, he picked up a paper and pencil and quickly sketched out the contents of a television commercial h e had just seen. Such artistic talent runs in the family: his mother, a graduate of Chicago's American Academy of Art, was a commercial artist and a grandfather was also artistically inclined. According to his mother, Ross was drawing almost before he cou ld speak, inspired by characters on the television shows Sesame Street and The Electric Company. When Ross discovered "Spider-Man" comics at an early age, he "just fell in love with the notion that there were colorful characters like this, performing good, sometimes fantastic deeds," the illustrator commented on his Web site.
