Zoot Suit Overview

The play Zoot Suit by playwright Luis Valdez premiered in Los Angeles in 1978 and opened on
Broadway in 1979, the first Chicano play ever to do so. Chicano is a term adopted by Mexican
Americans in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Zoot Suit is a fictional account of the Sleepy Lagoon
murder trial that took place in 1942 when 22 innocent Mexican American men were found guilty
of the murder, and the Zoot Suit Riots that ensued. The convictions were overturned in 1944.
These were also called the Pachuco riots. The young Mexican Americans of the 1930’s and 40’s
who wore zoot suits were called Pachucos.
