What We Were Promised Overview
Lucy Tan’s What We Were Promised is a multigenerational story that tells the interwoven stories of a Chinese-American expat couple, Lina and Wei, who live in an ultra-luxurious serviced apartment in Shanghai, and the rural-born maid named Sunny, who they hire as a nanny for their 12-year-old daughter Karen. A chain of events are prompted by theft of Lina’s bracelet and an unexpected visit from Wei’s estranged brother Qiang, and the novel explores familial duty, diverse expressions of love, and the struggle to belong.
