Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All Overview

Laura Ruby's novel, Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All, is the story of Frankie Mazza told through the perspective of Pearl Brownlow, the ghost of a young woman who has been dead more than 20 years. Frankie lives in an orphanage until life and love force her to return home to a father and stepmother who openly resent her presence. Nevertheless, Frankie begins to learn how to cope in the world outside the orphanage while finding hope for her future. Pearl, meanwhile, follows Frankie. Eventually, Pearl discovers she has been hiding her own truth from herself and that her brother murdered her because she loved the wrong person. The novel's main themes are gender roles, hope, and the roles of parents.
