The Sun Does Shine Overview
The Sun Does Shine is a memoir about Anthony Ray Hinton's wrongful conviction and life on Alabama's death row. Co-written by Lara Love Hardin, this book touches on Hinton's childhood and youth before his arrest at the age of twenty-nine when he was charged with murdering two men while committing robberies. Despite a solid alibi, a combination of prosecutorial misconduct, ineffective legal council, lack of money for proper representation, and entrenched institutional racism led to Hinton's conviction. Sentenced to death, he would spend the next thirty years on death row trying to clear his name and win his freedom. The majority of the book chronicles this period until Hinton's release in 2015. The Sun Does Shine explores themes of forgiveness, parental influence, race, and the flaws in the legal system all while asking: what is the price of a life?
