The Ogress and the Orphans Overview

Kelly Barnhill's novel The Ogress and the Orphans is a fantasy set in the fairy tale village of Stone-in-the-Glen. The Mayor is a dragon in disguise who has burned the town's most beloved places while turning everyone in town against each other and against the generous Ogress who has recently settled into a farm at the edge of the forest. The children at the Orphan House are filled with love for each other, and they use their intelligence and determination to turn things around for the entire village. The novel's main themes are the power of words, gratitude, the role of a neighbor, vulnerability, and the nature of fairy tales.
