Everything you need to understand or teach The Hollow Hills by Mary Stewart.
Mary Stewart’s 1973 novel The Hollow Hills is the second book in a series of five novels dedicated to a modern retelling of the Arthurian legend. This novel is told from Merlin’s point of view, and it chronicles the events from Arthur’s conception to his coronation. While it may seem difficult for The Hollow Hills to stand independently from the series’ first novel The Crystal Caves, Stewart created a self-contained story that needed no introduction to the previous book for readers to enjoy this one. The novel also does not create a cliff-hanger; instead, the story’s sole focus is for Merlin, the famed enchanter, to see that Arthur Pendragon becomes King of the British Isles.
